Max Dembo (Dustin Hoffman) leaves prison after a lengthy sentence, determined to turn his life around. However, a combination of indifference from the parole authorities and his own knack for self-destruction thwart his attempts to go straight. Hoffman prepared for the role in consultation with former jailbird turned screenwriter Edward Bunker ('Reservoir Dogs').
