The Spirit of Psychotherapy
The prime focus of psychotherapy theory and practise is intrapersonal and interpersonal. But these are nested in an oftenunexamined supra-personal context, sociological, ecological and spiritual. Having a belief system is generally associated withgood physical and mental health. The aim of the book is to see if the principles which underpin religion this can be applied to thelargely secular world of psychotherapy. The book starts from a qualitative study based on in-depth interviews with people from awide range of faith backgrounds, exploring the role belief and spirituality play in their everyday lives. These include Christianity -- Catholic, Anglican, Unitarian and Quaker -- Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism -- reform and orthodox -- Islam, Wicca, Druid, andagnosticism. From these interviews the author identifies eight core themes: the privacy yet permeability of an inner world; spirituality and lifecycle; belonging; attachment and hope; frameworks of meaning; awe; right action; rhythm and ritual. Individual chapters aredevoted to detailed descriptions of subjects' accounts of these, while drawing parallels and implications for psychotherapy. In a concluding section Holmes develops a secular psychotherapy viewpoint that takes account of this supra-personal, nonutilitarian,'virtue ethical' dimension. Although he touches on Freud's paper 'the uncanny', the book is emphatically not an attempteither to justify or refute Freud's speculative anthropology or his view of religion as an 'illusion'.
